Cy Pres Awards
Cy pres awards play a critical role in our ability to help people understand their privacy rights and advocate for strong consumer protections.
A cy pres award is a distribution of funds from a class action settlement to an organization that comes as near as possible to the interests of the class. Often these are funds remaining after settlement funds have been distributed to class members.
We use funding from cy pres awards to educate people about their privacy rights and choices, research emerging consumer privacy issues, create and improve research tools like our Data Breach Chronology and our Data Broker Database, and weigh in on policy proceedings with a consumer rights perspective.
At Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, we have been fortunate to be court-approved recipients of a number of cy pres awards in consumer privacy cases. If you are researching cy pres recipients for a case, and believe Privacy Rights Clearinghouse may be an appropriate recipient, please feel free to reach out to us at 619-298-3396 or support@privacyrights.org.
