Priscilla was seeking a promotion in her county job. She was asked to sign a waiver allowing the personnel department to conduct a background check. She felt the waiver was far too broad. This is an excerpt:

This authorization includes, but is not limited to, information, records, statements, and opinions pertaining to my employment, military service, financial status, criminal conviction, child abuse investigations, driving, or educational histories including, but not limited to, academic achievement, attendance, disciplinary records, performance ratings, complaints or grievances filed against me, and information of a confidential or privileged nature....This authorization...is valid for a 24-month period from the date indicated below...
